Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, 4 September 2016 (IUCN) – The Eastern Gorilla – the largest living primate – has been listed as Critically Endangered due to illegal hunting, according to the latest update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ released today at the IUCN World Conservation Congress taking place in Hawaiʻi. Four out of six great ape species are now Critically Endangered – only one step away from going extinct – with the remaining two also under considerable threat of extinction.

The IUCN Congress theme, Planet at the Crossroads, is timely as current efforts to halt or even slow the rate of species extinction are failing. The ecosystems that underpin our economies, well-being and survival are collapsing. The message is clear: we need urgent and collaborative action to tackle the unprecedented challenge facing society.

Close to 15% of the Earth's land and 10% of its territorial waters are covered by national parks and other protected areas; coverage of marine protected areas increased by almost 300% in the last decade; and 8 in 10 key biodiversity areas worldwide lack complete protection.
