Financial support

IUCN raised funds to sponsor participation of more than 500 delegates from Member organisations located in countries of low and middle income economies which otherwise would not have been able to attend the Congress and exercise their voting rights. Organizations were selected based on the following criteria:

  • delegates from Member organisations/institutions with voting rights that have paid their dues, up to and including 2015, by 31 October 2015;
  •  are located in countries of low and middle income economies according to the 2015 World Bank list of economies (January 2015 version); and
  • ensuring adequate geographic representation across all regions.

In the case that not enough funds are available to sponsor participation of one delegate per eligible Member organisation, Member-sponsored participants will be selected using additional criteria identified by the IUCN Council, a list of which can be found here.

Sponsored participants will be expected to:

  • Attend the full 10 days of the Congress
  • Attend all days of the Members’ Assembly and exercise their voting rights in person for at least 75% of the decisions taken during the Assembly
  • Participate in Forum events
  • Fill in a post-Congress survey
  • Have their Member organisation participate in at least 75% of the electronic votes on motions prior to the Congress

Non-compliance with the above, without a valid reason, will lead to penalties being imposed on those Member organisations/institutions.

Members are strongly encouraged to consider gender balance when selecting their delegate to attend the Congress.

Some Member organisations/institutions may be requested to cover part of the costs of their delegate’s participation in the World Conservation Congress. Members will be informed about whether they will receive full or partial sponsorship by the beginning of 2016 at the latest.

IUCN is not in a position to provide financial support to participants from non-Member organisations/institutions.
