Election of the Chair of the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication 2016-2020

On 17 April 2016, Ms. Juliane Zeidler, who has chaired IUCN’s Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) since her first election as Chair of CEC by the 2012 World Conservation Congress, informed me and the IUCN President that for health reasons, she was obliged to scale down her responsibilities in IUCN. On 20 April 2016 Juliane Zeidler informed the CEC Steering Committee that Nancy Colleton, CEC’s Deputy Commission Chair, had accepted to take over Juliane’s responsibilities as Chair of CEC with immediate effect and for the remainder of the term, in accordance with Regulation 46.

Juliane Zeidler has also withdrawn as Council’s sole candidate for the position of CEC Chair 2017-20.

While regretting the circumstances that led Juliane Zeidler to take this decision, the IUCN Council understands and respects her decision and wishes her all the best for a speedy and full recovery. The Council also shared with Juliane Zeidler its recognition and deep appreciation for the excellent work the CEC has delivered under her leadership.

With reference to Rule 79 which provides that

“Should a sole candidate for the post of the President, Treasurer or Chair of Commission withdraw or become ineligible, the Council shall meet in extraordinary session and, having considered the views of the Members of IUCN, shall propose a new candidate to the World Congress”,

the IUCN Council decided that, just over 4 months before the Congress, there is sufficient time to re-open the nomination process for the Chair of CEC on the basis of a new Call for nominations similar to the one I issued on 6 November 2015, albeit with a shorter timeline.

A Call for Nominations was sent to IUCN Members and members of the CEC on 9 May.  The deadline for submissions is 13 June 2016.
